The Hidden Load: Cleaning Out Your Home (and Your Mind)

Today I took one good step. I met with a friend who has agreed to be the pickup point for my online apartment cleanout sale and tested the best Google Maps route to their place. My friend even messaged a friend to see if a truck might be available on Saturday to help move what hasn’t sold.

On the way home, something hit me.

Cleaning out an apartment after 7 or 8 years of accumulating stuff is a big task.
But the even bigger task is cleaning out the mind that has been managing it all.

Because it’s not just boxes and furniture.
It’s the constant background work of remembering, deciding, postponing, worrying, and keeping track of everything.

That “management load” is heavy. And when it gets heavy enough, we don’t just feel tired… we lose agency. We stop taking steps. We spin.

The answer isn’t a heroic weekend or a perfect plan.
It’s one small step that reduces the load.

One Good Step for you today

Write down one sentence: “The thing I’m carrying in my mind right now is ______.”

Then choose one tiny action that lightens it:

  • make one decision
  • clear one small surface
  • schedule one pickup window
  • ask one person for help

Agency comes back when the next step is simple enough to do.
